Chambers [detail], 2018
site-specific installation
Amplifiers, piezoelectric microphones, transducers, wire.
Chambers, created in fall of 2018, investigates the structure of the MFA gallery and takes advantage of a couple of thick steel plates which cover underground crawl spaces which lead to the utilities access somewhere near the 3D shop. In this project, I used piezo contact microphones, amplifiers, transducers and speakers to encourage the building to feedback on itself. I got it started by dragging the microphones over the steel, and the chambers would resonate around a remarkably fixed frequency, approximately F#/A on the 440 scales.
If left to its own devices, the feedback lasted a long time, but usually had to be squelched due to the sound’s grating quality.
